Mounting Tractor Wheel Weights: Alignment

Tips and Tricks Wheel Weight Installation and Alignment

Tips and Tricks for Aligning Tractor Wheel Weights.

Mounting Tractor Wheel Weights.

When installing tractor wheel weights, regardless if the wheels are still on the tractor or you have them off the tractor and laid flat, simple alignment tools can be your best friend.

These pry bar (alignment tools) are available in sets for little money at Harbor Freight, Amazon, Walmart etc.  Better ones are available for more money through Grainger.  If you are not constantly rearranging tractor weights, go for the cheap sets.

Use these tools to align at least two holes when mounting your weights, leaving at least one bolt hole open to get the first bolt started and slightly snug.  Pull out the tool as you are ready to install the bolt that occupies that hole.  Its cheap, fast, and easy,  (See figure 1. below).

When stacking weights, even large weights, these types of tools will give you the leverage to wiggle the stacking weight into perfect alignment with the previous weight.

We recommend at least getting one of the kits that contain multiple length tools.  Better is a set of the longer tools.  These are often sold one each for very little money.  Usually best to have at least three.  A single person can usually wiggle the weights into alignment with only two tools, but having that third tool to run through an open hole can sometimes be a real back-saver.

Tighten all the bolts and nuts in a star pattern or crisscross pattern.  Make sure the weight is centered and is not hanging on the bolts.  Weights should be held in place by clamp force, not resting (or hanging) on the bolt body.

Check all bolts for tightness after 3-5 hours of use.  Thereafter check during routine maintenance or at least on a monthly basis.

Tractor Weights are heavy and can cause injury during installation. We urge you to take safety precautions and use good common sense during installation.
