Spotlight on the Massey Harris 6262 and 6262A Wheel Weights.
In this first edition of our new “Spotlight Series” we start things off with the well known Massey Harris 6262 (aka 6262A) wheel weight. This particular wheel weight has been in constant production for a very long time and is still available new from a variety of sources.
There are likely others that know more than we do about the development history on this wheel weight and the models on which it was first used. We invite comments below that will improve our knowledge of this interesting product.
The 6262 (aka the 6262A) wheel weight must have certainly been around since the late 1930s as I have noticed it installed on some Massey Harris 33 Standard tractors as well as some Massey Harris 20 and 101 model tractors. All of these models were in apparently original condition and had not been restored. I have also observed this wheel weight on quite a few of the restored Massey Harris 22 tractors.
While all of our old records have been long in storage, we did find where we sold this wheel weight new to tractor dealers in the early 1970s for less than $25.00 each. I doubt you could find a rusted used one for sale at that price today.
The history of the Massey Harris company is quite interesting and we urge you to read more about their origins, history, and successes. If you are interested in Massey Harris tractor models, you might want to check out the Massey Collectors Association for even more information.
As for the 6262(A) wheel weight; it is a simple design that stacks better than most wheel weights in the current market. It works best now with flat steel and cast wheels but will work with some wheels that have a more dished profile.
We find it especially popular with the new Kubota® tractors that have the large thick flat cast centers. We continue to offer this wheel weight in both our imported and USA produced versions. If you have a fairly large flat tractor wheel with the correct wheel weight mounting pattern, this weight is still an excellent choice. For tractors operating with the centers reversed to widen their stance, this weight can be a perfect addition for the outside of the reversed center on many models. Sometimes “old school” is really best.
